BLS The Lötschberg Mountain Route

Discover one of the most beautiful railway routes in Europe, the Lötschbergstraße, which provides an important connection between the Bernese Oberland and Valais.
One of the many highlights of this route is the 14,612 meter long Lötschberg Summit Tunnel. In addition to freight and regional trains, many wagon loads also pass through this tunnel, which is an important connection for road traffic there.

The route is world famous among railway enthusiasts thanks to the double loop (curved tunnel) on the northern slope, the numerous engineering structures and the southern slope in the Rhône Valley. With the opening of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel in 2007, it handles a large part of the traffic between Frutigen and Brig. Since then, the mountain route has only been used by RegioExpress trains and freight trains that do not pass through the base tunnel.
