Why stop when it's at its best? The resounding success of the ICE 1 set the course for a sequel. A new, improved generation of high-speed trains was needed.
Clever minds from the former Deutsche Bundesbahn determined the requirements for the second-generation ICE. This was to be used primarily on routes with less demand, where an ICE 1 with an impressive 700 seats was simply not economical. Thus, the ICE 2 was limited to six intermediate cars, a control car and a power unit. This train concept allowed the coupling of two trains to form a double train if necessary.
After its start of operation in 1996, the ICE 2 became a common and welcome face in train traffic for over 20 years. With its 280km/h top speed, it didn't have to hide from its big brother, the ICE 1.
But because everything beautiful comes to an end, the ICE 2 will gradually be phased out in the coming years. Reason enough, we think, to keep the memory of him alive inTrain Simulator.
