As a further development of the prototype locomotive Be 3/5, the Ae 3/6 II was developed, with only one transformer. The Ae 3/6 II series was procured in four tranches from 1923 to 1926 from the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Factory (SLM) and the Oerlikon Machine Factory (MFO). The design with only one transformer required an asymmetrical design, which is expressed in the axis arrangement 2'C1'. The torque of the two traction motors is transmitted to the middle axle via two countershafts and a triangular rod. Two coupling rods connect the three drive axles with each other. Since the power of the transformer did not satisfy the locomotives, a more powerful model was installed from number 10421.

The tap-changer used to control the tractive force (lever mechanism with over-switching choke coils) had already been used by MFO on some Ce 6/8 IIs. Later it found its way into the Ce 6/8 III. The traction motors, with a diameter of approx. 1900 mm and a weight of approx. 10 t each, are the largest traction motors ever used in SBB locomotives. As with other series, changes to the undercarriage made it possible to increase the top speed from 90 to 100 km/h in 1929.
