The Lötschberg Base Tunnel LBT
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel LBT is a 34.6-kilometre-long railway tunnel that crosses under the Bernese Alps between Frutigen in
the Bernese Oberland and Raron am Lötschberg and was put into
operation on 16 June 2007.
The Lötschberg Base Tunnel is the heart of the BLS infrastructure and a central element of the NRLA,
the New Rail Link through the Alps. Since its commissioning in 2007, the Lötschberg Base Tunnel
has become an integral part of the Swiss transport landscape. The tunnel has shortened the journey from the Swiss Plateau
to Valais, and freight trains no longer have to travel over the energy-intensive mountain route.
