After the existing lines between Hanover and Würzburg were already expected to be overloaded at the end of the 1960s, in 1974 the Federal Ministry of Transport instructed the Federal Railway to build a new line between Hanover and Würzburg. The Fulda - Würzburg section was put into operation when the timetable changed on May 29, 1988. Since then, passenger trains have been running around the clock and freight trains on the route during the night, which has thus become an important north-south axis in rail traffic.
