Würzburg with the Hessian railway junction Frankfurt connecting Main Spessart and former Ludwigs-West-Bahn follows largely the course of the Mains.Zwischen Lohr and Aschaffenburg Maintal is however very winding, so the speed on this busy main line would be very limited. Therefore, it was decided in the context of the beginning of 1850 planning of the entire route to shorten this section with a third of the route length over the heights of the Spessart.
