The SNCB's M4 coaches are UIC coaches produced at the end of the 1970s. The M4 series was ordered together with the Series 03 (AM-MS 80 / 82 / 83) to meet the needs of the future IC-IR plan of 1984 and the major electrification of the network. When they appeared on the Belgian rail network, they inaugurated the burgundy red livery with a white line under the windows. This livery was gradually introduced on all the equipment before being replaced at the end of the 20th century by a livery with a grey-white dominance, a blue line at the bottom of the body and red doors, known as the "new-look". It will be applied in turn to the M4 coaches during their renovation. From the end of the 1990s, the M4 coaches were renovated: their interior was slightly modified, although the 2 + 3 seat layout in second class was retained so as not to reduce the available capacity during rush hour. Since 2020, the delivery of the new Alstom/Bombardier M7 double-decker trainsets amortize the M4 coaches.
