The MS96 (also called DMT, which stands for Alternating Current Motor - Moteur Triphasé) is a type of electric trainsets of the Belgian railway company NMBS. They are three-piece and have a steering post on both sides. They can be recognized by the rubber on the headwalls; this allows two, three or four couples to be paired. There is then a walk-through option, the steering post folds to the side to make this possible. The rubber noses are based on Danish trainsets of the type IC3, which is why the MS96 is also called the Danish Nose or flat nose. This type of trainset is also sometimes referred to with the more mocking nickname toilet seat. The trainsets have air conditioning that can be controlled per carriage, which makes them suitable for long distances.
They were built by Bombardier/Alstom from 1996, 120 units were made.
The carriages of the MS96 are almost identical to the I11 carriages. One difference is that the MS96 is a trainset and therefore has a pantograph on the middle carriage. In addition, destination screens are not installed everywhere on the train.

There are three different variants ms96, which can run with each other in train switching:

  • 441-490: two-voltage motor sets; these can run on the classic Belgian rail network of 3 kV= and on the network of 25 kV~, the border lines to France and Luxembourg, theoretically also on the high-speed line from Leuven to Liège, but they are not allowed for this.
  • 501-547: mono-voltage motor sets; these can only run on the classic Belgian rail network of 3 kV= and until September 2018 also on the border section Arlon - Luxembourg (501-524), also 3 kV =.
  • 548-570: mono-voltage motor sets; these can only run on the classic Belgian rail network of 3 kV=.

(The "classic" Belgian 3kV rail network includes all Belgian electric lines that do not cross a border with the exception of the high-speed lines and of lines 42 Rivage – Gouvy, 165 Libramont – Bertrix – Athus, 166 Dinant – Bertrix and 167 Arlon – Athus – Rodange (L), which are equipped with 25 kV alternating current.)

These last two types are adaptable to 25 kV~, but since this is not necessary for most railway lines in Belgium, this investment has not yet been made. Furthermore, all types can drive on the liège - Maastricht border section, where a few kilometers under the Dutch overhead line voltage of 1.5 kV = is driven. Because these trains are designed for 3 kV=, they can only run on a quarter of the power under the Dutch overhead line. But since the Belgian overhead line on this route reaches Eijsden station, and there are no slopes parallel to the Meuse, that is not a problem.

  • Motors: 4 asynchronous motors
  • At the end of 2010, SNCB started removing the TBL 2 equipment and installing a TBL 1+ equipment.
  • 2020: installation ETCS Level 1 (also 1 LS) and Level 2
